Sunset Empire Transportation District Website is Down

The Sunset Empire Transportation District website is down and the public is being asked to use the alternate website nwconnector.org for route information.

SETD provides transportation in Clatsop County and is located in the northwest corner of Oregon along the coast. SETD encompasses the entire county, covering approximately 840 square miles and serving more than 37,000 individuals.

Bat Tests Positive for Rabies in Clatsop County

A bat found in Clatsop County recently tested positive for rabies. Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease. 

Rabies virus is transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal and while post exposure vaccination is effective, the best plan is prevention. In Oregon, the main reservoir of rabies is bats. 

Clatsop County Public Health Department reminds you to take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your pets from rabies:

• Avoid physical contact with bats – healthy, sick, alive, or dead. Be sure to keep children and pets away from bats
• Do not hand feed or otherwise handle stray animals and wildlife
• Vaccinate all dogs and cats against rabies. This protects them and provides an immune barrier between humans and wild animals

An overdose awareness event to shine the spotlight on lives lost to overdoses is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 31, at the Barbey Maritime Center in Astoria. 

Attendees are encouraged to bring a photo of someone they loved who died by overdose. Photos will be displayed on a memorial wall so their story can be shared at the Overdose Awareness Day event.

“We invite the community to come together to remember and celebrate loved ones we lost to an overdose. Together we can prevent future losses of life,” said Jenna King, Clatsop County Public Health Department harm reduction coordinator.

It is simple to save the lives of loved ones and to find resources for help. Clatsop County Senior Sheriff Deputy Chance Moore and Sergeant Nate Baldwin will share their experiences saving lives by reversing an overdose with naloxone.

Hood To Coast Relay is This Weekend

Runners participating in The Providence Hood to Coast Relay will come through Clatsop County this Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26.

Participants are expected to arrive early Friday evening through Saturday, finishing in Seaside. If possible, please avoid the race route and use alternate routes, especially in these areas during these times:

• Highway 202 from Birkenfeld to Highway 103: 6:30 p.m. Friday - 11:30 a.m. Saturday
• Highway 202 from 103 through Olney: 10 p.m. Friday - 1:30 p.m. Saturday
• Youngs River Road: 11:30 p.m. Friday - 5 p.m. Saturday
• Lewis and Clark Road: 3 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Saturday
• Seaside: All day Saturday

A hotline has been established by race organizers for the public to get information or register a complaint. The hotline is active now through Monday, September 4. The phone number is 844-428-8327.

Clatsop County Environmental Health licenses and inspects the temporary food booths in Seaside and on Hwy 202 for the race event. 

The Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office thanks you for your patience during this yearly event.

Clatsop Animal Shelter Purrfect Storm Update

A Barkometer we created to keep you informed about the pressures the shelter is weathering has dropped slightly thanks to recent pet adoptions. 

Adoption fees for dogs and cats include spay/neuter fees, vaccinations and other costs. For more information on how to adopt a shelter animal, visit ClatsopCounty.gov.

Septic Issues? A New Program May Help

A new program is available to help Clatsop County homeowners repair or replace septic systems that are damaged, non-working or have failed.

“It can be expensive to fix septic issues but this program can provide relief to individuals and small businesses. Eligible clients may receive a no-interest, no payment loan, with a 30-year term or due when the title changes. In other client’s situations, they could receive a grant which does not have to be paid back,” said Casey Mitchell, weatherization & housing rehab program manager for Community Action Team Inc.

This program is open to up to 105 participants. To be eligible, household income must be at 120% of area median income or less, and the septic system must be on private property in Columbia, Clatsop or Tillamook counties.

Youngs River Road is now open to all traffic at the Klaskanine River Bridge (MP 10.55).

Beginning Monday, August 7, Hillcrest Loop will be closed to all through traffic between Old HWY 30 and Akerstedt Road for a culvert replacement project at MP 0.5. The culvert replacement is anticipated to last approximately three weeks. Use Conroy Road and Old HWY 30 as a detour. Detour signage will be in place during the closures.

The railroad is conducting their intersection rebuilds at the following location and date:

Beginning Tuesday, August 22 – Westport Ferry Road will be closed at the rail crossing. Use Old Mill Town Road as the alternate to reach areas North of the tracks. Households and the fire department south of the tracks will remain accessible.

Crews will perform:

• Fog sealing recently chip sealed roads county wide
• Cleaning Sunset and Del Rey beach approaches. Approaches will be closed during the operation, so use an alternate approach
• Culvert maintenance in the Astoria District
• Brooming shoulders in preparation for road striping
• Striping roads county wide. Expect up to 20-minute delays OR until the painting crew can safely pull over to allow through traffic. Signage and cones stating wet paint will be in place, as well as flaggers to direct traffic around the wet paint

DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH WET PAINT. If you drive through wet paint where signage, cones and flaggers are visible, the County WILL NOT be responsible for the cost of cleaning paint off your vehicle. The County currently uses a water-based paint for its striping needs. Should you get any of this paint on your vehicle please wash it off IMMEDIATELY with water.

• An appointment is recommended before coming in to request and process a passport. It typically takes 10-13 weeks to receive a passport. Expedited service can take 7-9 weeks

• Please go to our webpage and schedule an appointment for passports, park passes, marriage licenses, dog licenses, and recordings with us. If you do not have an appointment, you may be asked to wait if we are with someone that has scheduled an appointment
